Body shape

The Inverted Triangle body shape

Your shoulders and bust measure wider than your hips, so the outline tapers downward.

Also called strawberry, V-shape, top-heavy.

What an inverted triangle body shape is

An inverted triangle is shoulder-dominant: the larger of your shoulder and bust measurements comes in more than about 5% above the hip. A 40-inch shoulder over a 36-inch hip is a clear case. The waist may be defined or straight — it does not change the classification.

It comes with a strong square shoulder line, often a full bust, a narrow hip and a flatter seat, and legs that are usually slim and straight. Swimmers and anyone who has done years of upper-body training end up here regardless of the frame they started with.

Balancing it means the reverse of pear advice: take structure out of the shoulder and put volume into the hem, so the two ends finish closer to level.

The measurements

A worked example. The rule is a ratio, so it holds at any size.

max(bust, shoulder) 40 > hip 36 × 1.05 → shoulder-dominant · INVERTED TRIANGLE

Without a tape measure

  • Tops fit at the shoulder only if you size up, and then hang at the waist
  • You buy a smaller size on the bottom than on the top
  • Shirts pull across the back and gape at the button line
  • Your shoulders look square and your seat reads flat
  • Your legs are slim relative to your upper body

Inverted Triangle sub-types

These are descriptions of the same measurement pattern at different scales and heights, not separate shapes. The rule above classifies all of them as inverted triangle.

Athletic inverted triangle

Built shoulders and back over a narrow hip. Raglan and dolman sleeves remove the shoulder seam that emphasises the width, and a wide-leg trouser reads as proportion rather than compensation.

Full-bust inverted triangle

The width comes from the bust rather than the frame. Support and a deep neckline change the line more than any cut below the waist, and a wrap top splits the bust vertically instead of across.

Petite inverted triangle

Under about 5'4". Hem volume has to be measured — a full midi can overwhelm — so a moderate A-line and a slightly cropped jacket balance without swallowing the frame.

What to wear

Works with the line

  • V-necks and scoop necks, which narrow the shoulder line visually
  • Raglan, dolman and set-in sleeves without padding
  • A-line, full and pleated skirts
  • Wide-leg, flared and cargo trousers — anything that builds the hip
  • Pattern and lighter colours on the bottom half
  • Deep armholes and soft draped fabric across the shoulder

Fights it

  • Puff sleeves, epaulettes and heavy shoulder pads
  • Boat necks and halter necks, which extend the shoulder line
  • Skinny jeans with an oversized top
  • Horizontal stripes across the bust and shoulder
  • Stiff structured blazers cut square at the shoulder

Questions

What does an inverted triangle body shape look like?
Broad square shoulders, often a full bust, a narrow hip and a flat seat, with slim straight legs. The outline tapers from the shoulder down.
Is an inverted triangle the same as a strawberry shape?
Yes. Strawberry, V-shape and top-heavy all describe the same shoulder-dominant measurement pattern.
What is the difference between an inverted triangle and an apple?
An inverted triangle is widest at the shoulder and bust and narrower at the hip. An apple measures level at the shoulder and hip with the fullest reading through the middle.
Should an inverted triangle avoid shoulder pads?
Structured shoulders extend a line that is already the widest part of the figure, so they work against balance. A soft or dropped shoulder gives the same tailored look without the width.
