How a photo becomes a shape

The analyzer finds 33 pose landmarks, traces your silhouette, and measures its width where bust, waist, high hip and hip sit — you can see all four lines drawn over your photo in the result. The widths then run through the same rules as every other tool on this site, in the same order, dominance before waist definition:

1 · hip leads by 5% and steps out below the waist → SPOON

2 · hip wider than bust and shoulder by 5% → PEAR

3 · bust or shoulder wider than hip by 5% → INVERTED TRIANGLE

4 · waist within 15% of bust or hip → APPLE

5 · waist under 75% of both → HOURGLASS

6 · nothing above fires → RECTANGLE

The thresholds and their reasoning are published on the methodology page. Like the quiz, a photo can see the upper-hip shelf that separates a spoon from a pear — the one distinction four tape measurements genuinely cannot make — so this page reaches all six shapes.

What a photo can and cannot see

A frontal silhouette measures width. That is enough to compare your shoulders, bust, waist and hips with each other, which is all a body shape is — but it is not a tape measure. It cannot see depth, so fullness carried forward through the middle reads narrower than it measures, and it will never output inches, because without knowing your distance from the camera any number in inches would be invented.

So treat the three tools honestly: the photo is the fastest, the calculator is the most precise, and the quiz needs nothing but a mirror. All three run the same rules — pick by what you have in hand.

Getting a photo that reads true

You cannot hold a phone at arm's length and fit your whole body in frame — and you do not need to. Prop the phone against something at waist height, step back two or three paces, and use the self-timer. Or take a mirror photo, which works better than it sounds: the mirror doubles the optical distance, which actually reduces perspective distortion. Or hand the phone to someone and have them shoot from waist height, square-on.

Then the pose, which matters more than the camera: arms straight and held a little away from your sides so they read as arms rather than torso, fitted clothing so the outline is yours rather than the fabric's, hair up or behind your shoulders, whole body in frame head to ankle. The analyzer checks every one of these and tells you which to fix rather than guessing around it — a reading it cannot defend is a reading it refuses to give.

How does the body shape analyzer work?
It finds 33 body landmarks in your photo, traces your silhouette, and measures its width at four lines — bust, waist, high hip and hip. Those widths then go through exactly the same five rules the site's calculator applies to tape measurements, in the same order, and the result prints the comparison that produced it. The analysis runs on your device using MediaPipe, an open-source computer-vision library, so there is no server involved.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The model downloads to your browser and the analysis happens on your device — the photo is never sent, stored, or seen by anyone. You can verify this: open your browser's developer tools on the network tab and run an analysis — beyond the one-time model download, not a single request goes out while your photo is read.
How accurate is body shape analysis from a photo?
Good enough to classify, not good enough to tailor. A frontal photo measures widths, not the circumferences a tape measures, and it cannot see depth — fullness carried forward reads narrower than the same fullness carried side-to-side. Shape classification only needs how your widths compare with each other, and each width is converted to its tape equivalent using factors derived from ANSUR II, a public anthropometric survey of 1,986 women measured both ways — without that step, silhouette geometry alone would call almost everyone broad-shouldered. If your result sits close to a boundary, ten minutes with a tape and the calculator settles it.
Why does it ask me to retake the photo?
Because a wrong reading is worse than no reading. The analyzer rejects photos it would misread and tells you what to change: arms resting against your body get measured as body, hands on hips add hand-width exactly at the hip line, a side angle hides the widths being compared, and a hem that swallows your legs replaces your hip line with fabric. Each rejection says exactly what to fix.
What photo works best?
Whole body head to ankle, facing the camera square-on, arms straight and held slightly away from your sides, in fitted clothing with hair up or behind your shoulders. Prop your phone at waist height and use the self-timer, take a mirror photo, or have someone stand a few steps back and shoot from waist height. Even light and a plain background help the outline trace cleanly.
Can it tell me my measurements in inches?
No, and it does not pretend to. Without knowing your distance from the camera, a photo cannot produce inches or centimeters honestly — so the analyzer reports proportions, with your hip width set to 100. Proportions are all a body shape is; if you want the numbers themselves, that is what a tape measure and the calculator are for.
